A 30-year-old man was thrown from a 12th-floor apartment as a tornado passed through central China's Hubei province, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The phenomenon left at least 11 dead, more than 331 injured and a trail of destruction with winds of up to 260 km/h during its passage on Monday night (6), local time.

More than 4,855 homes were damaged in Hubei, a major industrial hub known for car manufacturing, Xinhua said.

One of the worst-hit places was the city of Huanggang, where the wind was so strong it sucked a 30-year-old man and some of his belongings - including a sofa and cupboards - from his 12th-floor apartment, local media reported.

The man is now in the ICU of a hospital, according to reports.

In other parts of the city, several heavy trucks were lifted and moved up to 30 meters by the force of the winds.

A video showed a large tornado passing through the nearby city of Ezhou, where five people died.

Local authorities acknowledged the "enormous losses caused by the disaster" and reported that more than 3,000 people participated in the rescue efforts.

Tornadoes are rare in Hubei province; the last registration had occurred in May 2021.

According to experts, the bad weather in Hubei is the result of Typhoon Maysak overlapping with the early summer rainy season. The phenomenon comes as southwest China's Guangxi region faces severe flooding, and on the heels of a deadly landslide in northwest China's Gansu province.

This Tuesday (7), Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for full rescue and assistance efforts, as well as the resettlement of affected people.

Since Sunday (5), Typhoon Maysak has caused flooding in the Guangxi region, leaving four dead and eight missing. More than 600 people were still awaiting evacuation, a local official told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

The typhoon brought intense rain to the region, breaking rainfall records in 24 hours, including in the city of Hengzhou.

Furthermore, in a village in Hengzhou, flood waters pose an additional threat. More than 800 snakes escaped when a snake farm was flooded on Monday, an official told local news outlet Hongxing.

Videos on social media showed the snakes sticking their heads out of the muddy water that flooded the village.

One resident was bitten and is being treated at a hospital, while about a dozen residents formed a team to capture the snakes, according to the Hongxing report.

Although many of the snakes were non-venomous water snakes and rat snakes, some were of the Naja genus, considered highly venomous, the Xiaoxiang Daily newspaper reported.
