Sirens sound in Bahrain, says Interior Ministry

Sirens sounded in Bahrain, the country's Ministry of the Interior said in a post on the social network X this Tuesday (7), asking citizens to "remain calm and go to the nearest safe place".

The warning came after Iran said it would deliver an "overwhelming response" to recent US attacks.

"The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will deliver a crushing response to US aggression and terrorist action," Iran's joint military high command, Central Headquarters Khatam al-Anbiya, said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

The command added that "under no circumstances will it permit interference in the affairs or management of the Strait of Hormuz."

It also declared that the "only safe passage" for vessels sailing through the Strait of Hormuz would be through routes designated by Iran.

The US launched new attacks on dozens of targets across Iran between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and reimposed sanctions as "punishment" for attacks on commercial ships near the disputed waterway.

According to CENTCOM (United States Central Command), the offensive hit more than 80 Iranian targets, including Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile capabilities and more than 60 small IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) vessels, in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the American military, the offensive aimed to "reduce Iran's ability to continue attacking international trade flowing through this trade corridor."

Iranian state broadcaster Press TV said several explosions were reported in the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as the island of Qeshm.

Bahrain is home to the headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, responsible for patrolling the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and Arabian Sea.

Throughout the conflict, Iran has carried out recurring attacks on US military bases throughout the Middle East, including in Bahrain.
