Argentina is the new chief economist at the IMF; know who you are

Argentinean Silvana Tenreyro is the new chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the institution's general director Kristalina Georgieva announced on Tuesday (7). Tenreyro will assume the position of Economic Advisor and Director of the Research Department on August 10 in place of Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas.
In the announcement, Kristalina Georgieva highlighted Silvana Tenreyro's academic experience and experience in formulating public policies, in addition to her contact with international institutions. Silvana worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023.
"At a time of profound transformation and growing uncertainty in the global economy, Silvana's combination of intellectual leadership and political experience will help ensure that the Fund's analytical work, multilateral surveillance and policy advice remain at the forefront in support of our member countries", highlighted the institution's director general.
According to the note released by the IMF, Silvana has Argentine, British and Italian nationality. The new chief economist completed her doctorate (Ph.D.) and master's degree (M.A.) in Economics from Harvard University, after graduating in economics from the National University of Tucumán, in Argentina.

At the beginning of her career, Silvana worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of Mauritius. She is currently part of the External Advisory Group of the IMF Managing Director and advises the main public and private institutions on economic and financial issues.
In her academic career she has published in the world's main economic journals and has been recognized by awards, including the Yrjö Jahnsson Prize, the Bernhard Harms Prize and the Birgit Grodal Prize. She is a member of the British Academy, the Econometrics Society and the Royal Economic Society, as well as an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Economic Association. She also served as President of the European Economic Association.
