HAVANA, July 7 (Reuters) - Cuba said it had reconnected most of the country to the national electricity grid on Tuesday, although millions of people remained without power as the country struggles to generate even a third of current demand amid a U.S.-imposed fuel blockade.

The authorities have not yet fully explained the cause of the nationwide blackout that occurred on Monday. The country's third blackout this year left an already exhausted population of nearly 10 million people in the dark overnight.

UNE, the country's electricity grid operator, reported on Tuesday night that it had reestablished the network connection from Pinar del Río, in the far west of Cuba, to Holguín, in the east. Santiago de Cuba, the island's second largest city, remained disconnected and without power, according to authorities.

About two-thirds of the capital, Havana, had power restored by the end of Tuesday, although another widespread and unexpected power outage hit the city around 6pm (local time).

Havana's residents, now accustomed to blackouts lasting 30 hours or more, had largely resigned themselves to spending another night swatting away mosquitoes and getting little sleep.

"I don't see a quick solution to this problem," said Amauri González, a local resident who had left his house to get some fresh air. "Our power plants are obsolete and there is no fuel."
