Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday (18) that the intense drone strikes against Russia are in retaliation for an attack that damaged a historic monastery in Kiev this week, and that "Moscow will burn" if the attacks continue.

Overnight, dozens of drones attacked Moscow, hitting the Russian capital's oil refinery for the second time this week.

"We don't want this war, we never did, and everyone knows that, and so do our partners," Zelensky said in a voice message sent to journalists in a WhatsApp group. "But if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn."

At least ten people died on Monday (15) across Ukraine in a drone and missile attack that damaged the thousand-year-old Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery.

Zelensky was due to participate in a meeting of Ukraine's military allies in Brussels this Thursday (18). He stated that the provision of air defense to Ukraine through a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) program and the creation of an anti-ballistic missile system by Ukraine and its allies would be discussed at the meeting.

The Ukrainian president called on Europe and the United States to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions on Russia's defense and energy sectors, as well as its broader economy, to force President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

"Everyone needs to put pressure on Putin: Ukrainians, absolutely all Europeans, Americans and Russians - it's time to sober up and put pressure on their leader."

Understand the war in Ukraine
Russia began a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently holds about a fifth of the neighboring country's territory.

Still in 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin decreed the annexation of four Ukrainian regions: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

The Russians are slowly advancing in the east and Moscow shows no signs of abandoning its main war objectives. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, President of the United States, is pushing for a peace agreement.

Ukraine has carried out increasingly bold attacks inside Russia and says the operations are aimed at destroying essential Russian military infrastructure.

Putin's government, in turn, has intensified air strikes, including drone offensives.

Both sides deny targeting civilians, but thousands have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainians.

It is also believed that thousands of soldiers died on the front line, but neither side releases military casualty figures.

The United States says 1.2 million people were injured or killed in the war.
