In mainland China, trading was also positive: the Shanghai Composite rose 1.65%, to 4,036.59 points, and the less comprehensive Shenzhen Composite advanced 2.22%, to 2,709.18 points, after consumer inflation data came in slightly below expectations.

On the other hand, the Hang Seng fell 0.70% in Hong Kong, to 24,030.18 points, giving back part of the previous day's strong 3% gain, and the Taiex fell 0.83% in Taiwan, to 45,354.61 points.
