Singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75, according to an official statement published on her website. The Welsh woman had been hospitalized since May after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery.

Considered one of the most striking voices in pop and rock of the 1980s, the artist had a hoarse tone that made her singing instantly recognizable and powerful from the release of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in 1983, one of the best-selling hits in the history of British music.

In addition to scoring big hits like "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out for a Hero", the singer has accumulated three Grammy nominations and was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 for her contribution to music.

Who was Bonnie Tyler?
Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1952, in Skewen, Wales, the singer grew up in a Protestant home, where she took her first steps in music singing in the local chapel.

At the age of 16, he abandoned his studies to work in a market, but the direction of his life changed after participating in a talent contest. After working as a backing vocalist and playing in local bands, she was discovered by businessman Roger Bell in 1975. Under the RCA label, she adopted the stage name Bonnie Tyler and debuted with the album The World Starts Tonight, in 1977.

That year would be decisive: after surgery to remove nodules on his vocal cords, Tyler ignored the doctor's recommendation of absolute silence. The result was the distinctive hoarseness that became his global identity. International recognition came soon after with the hit "It's a Heartache", which reached third place on the Billboard Hot 100.

The peak of his career, however, was reserved for the 1980s. Once at CBS Columbia, he joined forces with producer Jim Steinman to create the anthem "Total Eclipse of the Heart". The track topped worldwide charts and propelled the album Faster Than the Speed of Night straight to the top of the British charts. The resounding success continued with "Holding Out for a Hero", a classic from the soundtrack of the film Footloose (1984).

Throughout his career, he shared studios with legends such as George Martin, Elton John and Mike Oldfield. In Brazil, she immortalized the romantic duet "Sem Limites pra Sonhar" with Fábio Jr., in 1987. Far from stopping after her commercial peak, Bonnie remained firm in studios and stages.

In 2022, he carried out his first tour on Brazilian soil, passing through capitals such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Showing her timeless relevance, in 2024 she returned to the European charts by lending her striking voice to the track "Together", by David Guetta and Hypaton, an electronic reinterpretation of her greatest classic.
