Singer Bonnie Tyler dies, aged 75
Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits such as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "It's a Heartache", died this Wednesday (8), aged 75. The information was confirmed this Thursday (9) on the singer's social networks.
"Bonnie's family and team are deeply saddened to inform you that Bonnie passed away unexpectedly last night, in a hospital in Portugal, as a result of the illness for which she was being treated. We will release a new statement soon, but for now, we ask that the family's privacy be respected at this time of deep sadness", says the note.
The singer had been hospitalized since May in a hospital in Portugal, where she underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery. Last month, a spokesperson for Bonnie reported that the singer came out of the coma, but remained very weak.

Bonnie Tyler is the stage name of Gaynor Hopkins. Born in Wales, she became one of the most commercially successful singers of the 1980s. Recognized for her hoarse tone and dramatic performances, she became known for moving between country rock and operatic rock, a style that became her trademark in collaborations with producer Jim Steinman.
The difference in her voice was the result of a medical intervention in 1977. After undergoing surgery to remove nodules on her vocal cords, Tyler did not continue recommendations for absolute rest, which resulted in permanent hoarseness.
The new timbre, often compared to that of Rod Stewart, became her main artistic resource and boosted the international success of "It's a Heartache" at the end of the 1970s.
The definitive turning point in the singer's trajectory occurred in 1982, when she signed with CBS (Sony) and sought a change in musical direction by working with composer and producer Jim Steinman, known for his theatrical and grandiose productions for Meat Loaf.

The result of the partnership was the album "Faster Than the Speed of Night" (1983), which earned the artist historic numbers in the British and American charts.
The main highlight is "Total Eclipse of the Heart", a song that became the biggest hit of Tyler's career. With almost seven minutes in its original version, the song is an operatic "power ballad". Despite deviating from the radio standards of the time, the hit reached first place on the Billboard Hot.
The impact of the track was amplified by a video clip with a surrealist aesthetic, today considered a classic of the MTV era. Filmed in a former asylum, the video features bright-eyed children in a choir, loincloth dancers doing somersaults and fencers.
Thanks to the performance of the album and single, Tyler became the first British female artist to debut a record directly at the top of the UK chart. She also remains the only Welsh artist to have a single at number one on the UK Singles Chart.
In addition to the 1983 success, Tyler's career is marked by the track "Holding Out for a Hero" (1984), which was part of the "Footloose" soundtrack, but which is better known to younger generations for its strong presence in "Shrek 2".
In 2023, the artist's career was officially recognized by the British crown, when she received the title of member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
