About to meet Messi again, Griezmann says playing in MLS is a "dream"

Antoine Griezmann stated this Tuesday (7) that he achieved one of his goals by transferring to Orlando City, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. The former French national team striker is ready to write another chapter in his rivalry with Lionel Messi, after years of facing the Argentine captain in Spanish football.

The 35-year-old signed with Orlando City on a contract valid until 2028, after leaving Atletico Madrid as the Spanish club's all-time top scorer. He stated that he had dreamed of playing in MLS since he was 18 and that he wanted to transfer while he still felt physically and mentally capable of performing at a high level.

"Since I was 18 years old, it was a dream to come to MLS," he said. "It was very important for me to arrive in good physical and mental condition, and that's why I took this step now."

"I connected very well with the club, I loved the city and my children are delighted. It has been incredible and unexpected for me and my family, and I hope we can repay all this affection."

Griezmann revealed that Orlando sporting director Ricardo Moreira's visit to his home in Madrid before the transfer "touched his heart" and helped convince him that Orlando was the right destination.

The world champion with France in 2018 added that he was impressed by the technical level of his new teammates during their first training sessions and hopes that their experience can help Orlando fight for titles.

"I didn't notice much difference between the level here and in Europe", he said. "I'm here to win trophies, create a connection with the fans and help my teammates grow, both professionally and personally."

Griezmann also said he was looking forward to facing Messi again in the Florida derby against Inter Miami. The Frenchman spent two seasons playing alongside the Argentine at Barcelona, after years of rivalry when he defended Atlético's colors.

"I've been told a lot about the classic", commented Griezmann. "I watched the last game. It will be a joy to face Messi again, and also Rodrigo (De Paul), with whom I have a very good relationship", concluded the striker, referring to his former Atlético de Madrid teammate.
