More than half a million Lebanese displaced by the conflicts have begun to return to their communities, but tens of thousands remain unable or unwilling to return home due to insecurity, damage to housing and a lack of basic services, the UN (United Nations) reported this Tuesday (7).

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said the humanitarian situation in Lebanon remains critical despite a reduction in hostilities following a ceasefire announced on June 19.

"Although returns continue, military activities and security incidents are still being reported, and conditions remain fragile in many areas," Dujarric told reporters.

He stated that more than 34 thousand people still live in collective shelters. Many families are reluctant or unable to return because their homes have been damaged, unexploded ordnance remains in villages, and essential services remain unavailable.

Children have been especially affected, Dujarric said, citing UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) estimates that 308,000 children remain displaced, more than 1 million children are in need of humanitarian assistance and 62 children unaccompanied or separated from their families have been identified.

Humanitarian partners have reported increased protection concerns, including child labor, school dropouts, exploitation, gender-based violence, domestic violence, harassment, restrictions on movement and obstacles to accessing humanitarian aid, the spokesperson said.

Dujarric also reported that Jean Arnault, acting head of the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, began a visit to Israel this Tuesday, after meetings in Lebanon with high-ranking authorities.

A revised humanitarian aid request from the UN and Lebanon seeks to raise $640 million to assist 1.4 million people by August. To date, the initiative has received 42% of the necessary funding.
