At the Richmond Neighborhood Center, in San Francisco, United States, more than 200 people are on the waiting list for the region's food bank. The center is just a few miles west of "AI Alley," where a cluster of large artificial intelligence companies receives billions of dollars in investment and pays high salaries to employees - which in turn drives up real estate prices and rents.

San Francisco is a clear example of how the booming AI industry helps drive economic growth more broadly, but masks economic inequality affecting low- and middle-income families.

The city also reflects patterns seen on a national scale: In the first three months of the year, the U.S. economy grew at a solid annualized rate of 2.1%, driven largely by increased business investment in AI, according to Commerce Department data.

However, consumer confidence remains at levels close to the lowest in history due to soaring prices associated with the war in the Middle East; Additionally, the lowest-income quarter of the U.S. population has seen the lowest wage growth among all income groups this year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

"The inequalities in the neighborhood have only grown more and more," Yves Xavier, director of community programs at the Richmond Neighborhood Center, told CNN. "We cannot establish a direct cause and effect relationship with AI and say 'that's exactly it', as the process has been occurring for some time; but it doesn't take a genius to understand how this is widening inequalities in a city that already faces these problems."

He added that demand for the nonprofit's food bank has increased by about 10% this year.

The disparity in conditions between the poorest and richest Americans has emerged as a central theme in the US economy, and experts say AI plays a significant role in this scenario.

The billions of dollars invested in the AI industry have created a group of highly paid professionals in technology hubs across the country - including San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Jose and Washington, D.C. -, according to a report by Oxford Economics. These workers are part of the richest 10% in the US who, through their spending, increasingly drive the country's economic growth - being responsible for up to 62% of this growth, according to Moody's.

SpaceX debuted on Wall Street last month with the largest initial public offering (IPO) on record. The company is now worth more than $2.1 trillion. AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, both based in San Francisco, are also preparing for their own IPOs, which would add trillions in market value. Additionally, San Francisco companies account for nearly two-thirds of global AI funding, according to data firm Crunchbase.

Among those who are losing ground are vast portions of the American population: recent graduates who face difficulties finding work; low-income Americans who continue to accumulate debt as they feel the impact of higher inflation; and even workers in the creative industries, according to Manuel Pastor, director of the Equity Research Institute at the University of Southern California.

Meanwhile, the gap between broader AI-driven economic growth and the lived reality of millions of Americans continues to widen.

"The inequalities here are very, very pronounced," said Xavier, referring to San Francisco.
