Midfielder Assan Ouedraogo was on vacation in Marbella, a Spanish city known for its paradisiacal beaches, when he received the call-up to join Germany's World Cup squad following Lennart Karl's injury.


Karl suffered a muscle injury during training and ended up being cut from the World Cup. Coach Julian Nagelsmann then turned to the RB Leipzig player.


"I received the call from the national coach on Friday night, while I was on vacation," said Ouedraogo in an interview on the club's own website.

"When Julian Nagelsmann told me that I was now part of the cast, I needed a moment to absorb the news and realize what had happened before immediately packing my things," he continued.


Ouedraogo had already made one appearance for Germany when he was also called up to replace an injured player, Nadiem Amiri, coming on in the second half and scoring the last goal in the 6-0 victory over Slovakia in November in the last match of the European Qualifiers.


"It's a great honor and makes me very proud to represent Germany at the World Cup. A childhood dream of mine has come true, a dream I've worked hard for, especially in recent months and years," said Ouedraogo.

The player took the opportunity to express solidarity with his injured compatriot and wished him a speedy recovery.


"At the same time, I would like to wish Lenny a speedy and complete recovery. I'm sorry he was injured so close to the tournament and couldn't participate," he said.


Germany is in Group E of the World Cup and debuts against Curaçao, on June 14, in Houston. The bracket also includes Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
