The sudden escalation of the conflict between the United States and Iran adds a new challenge to the already delicate meeting of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) leaders, held in Turkey.


The summit was already promising to be difficult for the alliance's European members, who face an American president who has threatened to reduce the US commitment to Europe and take control of territory belonging to one of the allies.


NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte dedicated much of the first day of the summit, on Tuesday (7), to highlighting the increase in defense spending by alliance countries, one of the main criticisms of American President Donald Trump.

Rutte announced new defense deals worth tens of billions of dollars in a bid to demonstrate that Europe's defense financial burden is being redistributed. But the new escalation of the conflict, possibly the biggest since the US and Iran signed the Memorandum of Understanding last month, now threatens to turn NATO discussions into a secondary issue.


Trump stated this Wednesday morning (8) that he believes that the memorandum of understanding signed with Iran is "over", following the series of attacks recorded in the region. "It's a waste of time negotiating with them," Trump said during the summit.


The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, said on Wednesday that "the exchange of attacks between the US and Iran makes the already delicate negotiations to end the war even more difficult."
