Video shows support columns bent in a skyscraper in New York
The building in New York, in the United States, which led to a major removal operation due to the risk of collapse was stabilized this Wednesday (8), according to the city hall. Authorities and engineers are still trying to figure out what caused the problem.

The skyscraper was a commercial building that is being converted into residential. On Tuesday (7), it was closed after support columns gave way. Neighboring buildings also needed to be evacuated, including the Brazilian Consulate in New York.
The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, reported this Wednesday that emergency teams installed temporary supports and steel beams between the 18th and 23rd floors. According to him, the structure has not experienced any new displacements since Tuesday morning.
The 37-story building is about a block from the UN headquarters. Part of the busy 42nd Street was closed.
This Wednesday, some properties neighboring the building were reopened, but four remain closed. A restaurant on the ground floor of a fifth building also remains closed, according to Mamdani.
Eva Notwicz, 47, lives opposite the building and says she welcomes the transformation of the old commercial building into housing. However, she became worried when she saw the construction of new floors on the structure, exactly above the point where the columns gave way.
"It felt like I was suspended in the air. But we trust the builders," she said.
She and her son had to leave the apartment in a hurry on Tuesday morning, taking only their cell phone and the dog. The two were able to return home during the night.
The cause is still unknown

One of the developers responsible for the project told The New York Times that the building was never in danger of collapsing and classified the problem as a common construction incident.
"This incident is nothing more than a typical construction mishap," said Nathan Berman, founder and chief executive of developer MetroLoft.
According to him, the columns were probably not adequately reinforced and, therefore, did not support the weight of the expansion made to the building.
Experts agree that the risk of collapse is low, but say that city inspectors will need to determine the exact cause of the failure before authorizing the resumption of the work. According to them, there are several hypotheses to explain the problem.
Magued Iskander, head of the department of civil and urban engineering at the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University (NYU), said that adapting an existing building is more complex than building a building from scratch.
"There are more unknown variables. It's easier to design from a blank sheet of paper," he said.
The building, which for decades housed Pfizer's headquarters, is being transformed into a residential complex with 1,600 people. apartments. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2027, according to the architecture firm Gensler.
Mamdani stated that he continues to support the conversion of commercial buildings into housing as a way to address the housing access crisis in New York.
According to him, the city's Department of Buildings will carry out a rigorous assessment to ensure that the building is safe and complies with all standards before work resumes.
