Several explosions are heard on Kharg Island, says Iranian state media

Several explosions were reported on the Iranian island of Kharg, a vital hub for Tehran's oil exports, Iranian state media reported on Tuesday (7).

The island, an eight-kilometre strip of land located off the Iranian coast, is a lifeline for Tehran's economy, typically handling around 90% of the country's crude oil exports. It has been described by US officials as the "central point of all Iranian oil supplies".

The Press TV report reported that "several explosions" were heard at the scene.

A new wave of explosions was also reported on the island of Qeshm - Iran's largest island in the Persian Gulf, considered part of its defense strategy near the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has attacked both islands several times, and US President Donald Trump previously considered the idea of taking control of Kharg Island, as well as other Iranian oil infrastructure.

Kharg Island is a coral formation located just 25 kilometers off the coast of Iran in the Persian Gulf.

Almost every day, millions of barrels of crude oil gush from Iran's major oil fields - including Ahvaz, Marun and Gachsaran - via pipelines to the island, known among Iranians as the "Forbidden Island" due to strict military control.

Its long breakwaters (coastal structures that protect ports and shorelines from the force of waves) stretch into the waters surrounding the island, which are deep enough to accommodate supertankers, making it a crucial location for oil distribution.

The island has long been central to Iran's economy. White House officials believe that seizing the island would "completely bankrupt" the IRGC (Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), CNN reported earlier this year.

Trump had previously said that Kharg was "not a priority." But since 1988, decades before he was elected, he has been talking about taking over the island. "One shot fired at one of our men or ships and I would wipe out the island of Kharg. I would go in and take it," he told The Guardian in an interview at the time.

A 1984 CIA document stated that the facilities are "the most vital in the Iranian petroleum system, and their continued operation is essential to the country's economic well-being."

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid recently declared that destroying the terminal would "paralyze Iran's economy and overthrow the regime."

Storage capacity
According to Reuters news agency, Iran supplies about 4.5% of the world's oil, pumping 3.3 million barrels of crude oil and 1.3 million barrels of condensate and other liquids daily.

And the island has been receiving oil tanker shipments "non-stop since the start of the war," according to TankerTrackers.com, which uses satellite imagery, coastal photographs and data to track crude oil shipments.

In the weeks leading up to the joint US and Israeli attacks on Iran, Kharg exports rose to near-record levels, US investment bank JP Morgan said in a note reported by Reuters.

Storage capacity at Kharg is estimated at around 30 million barrels and, according to global trade analytics firm Kpler, around 18 million barrels of crude oil are currently stored there, Reuters reported.
