USA and Iran will have new round of talks in Qatar
The United States launched a series of attacks against Iran, the Central Command of the American Armed Forces (Centcom) reported on Tuesday (7). According to the military, the operation is a response to attacks against three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Centcom, the offensive aims to impose "high costs" on Iran for attacking commercial vessels manned by civilians in one of the world's main shipping routes. were recorded in Sirik, a port city in southern Iran, close to the Strait of Hormuz. Until the last update of this report, there was no information about the cause of the explosions or possible victims.
Earlier, the British maritime security agency UKMTO reported that three ships were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz. No one was injured.
The Qatari government stated that one of the vessels hit was the oil tanker "Al Rekayyat" and blamed Iran for the attack. According to Reuters, behind the scenes, US authorities also blamed Tehran.
The attacks occurred despite the ceasefire signed between the United States and Iran after the war that began at the end of February.
Despite the new escalation, negotiations continue. An American government official told Reuters that representatives of the two countries continue to act "in good faith" to try to reach a definitive peace agreement.
Safety of navigation and control over the Strait of Hormuz is one of the main points of friction in negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Sanctions
After attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States once again imposed sanctions on Iran's oil sector. The American government revoked this on Tuesday a license that had temporarily lifted restrictions on Iranian oil exports.
The exemption, announced in June as part of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, allowed Tehran to produce, sell and deliver crude oil and oil products until August 21.
In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the decision and stated that the measure violates the Islamabad Memorandum, signed to end the war between the two countries.
Tehran also held Washington responsible for the consequences of the decision and said it would adopt "all necessary measures" to protect its interests and national security.
