The leader of the PT (Workers' Party) in the Chamber, deputy Pedro Uczai, presented a PEC (Constitutional Amendment Proposal) with the aim of guaranteeing national sovereignty over payment systems operated by the Central Bank, such as PIX, which recently came into the sights of the United States government.


The action takes place amid the new tariff proposal from USTR (United States Trade Representative), which cites PIX as one of the reasons for recommending 25% taxation on Brazilian imports.


"Adds a single paragraph to article 192 of the Federal Constitution to ensure national sovereignty in the institution and operation of payment systems and prohibit restrictions imposed by a foreign government or resulting from international treaties, agreements or negotiations, which are harmful to sovereignty or national interests", proposes the amendment.

The proposal declares the PIX as a public asset and "one of the most relevant public infrastructures in the country". In reference to the imbroglio with Donald Trump's government, the document points out the need to raise its protection to a constitutional level since "national strategic infrastructures began to be treated by foreign powers as an object of pressure and negotiation".


At the beginning of the month, during a delivery schedule in Catalão, Goiás, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appeared holding a cardboard with the phrase "The PIX is from Brazil".


In a meeting with his state ministers on the 3rd, Lula admitted that the federal government was surprised by the possibility of new tariffs imposed by the United States. The head of the Executive highlighted that he will not accept the "treatment" that the country gave Brazil this week.

"What is important for you to know is that we are at a decisive moment for Brazilian society, and even part of world society, to recognize the strengthening of democracy in our country. Our fight to strengthen multilateralism. Our fight so that this country is not treated at any time as an insignificant republic", stated the president. "We are very big, we have a lot of history and we cannot accept the treatment that the US gave Brazil this week."
