Towards the end of each NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Summit, the 32 member countries issue a joint declaration that often includes many defense policies and investments already announced throughout the meetings.
However, the summit declaration always offers insight into what NATO heads of state and government want to emphasize most and on which they all agree.
See the main points of the declaration from this year's summit, held in Ankara, Turkey:
"Unwavering" commitment to collective defense:
Members of the defensive alliance reiterated their commitment to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which states that an attack on an ally be treated as an attack on everyone in the organization.
Increased investments by Europe:
According to the declaration, European member countries and Canada increased their defense investments by more than US$139 billion (equivalent to around R$720 billion) for 2025. US President Donald Trump still made sharp criticisms on the issue of defense spending during the summit, stating that the US pays "disproportionately" to other allies.
'Firm' commitment to Ukraine
Much of the document focused on countering threats from Russia and maintaining strong support for Ukraine. The text highlighted that European allies and Canada "now finance the vast majority of security assistance to Ukraine through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms." It also stated that member countries agree that support "must be equitable, predictable and sustainable in the long term."

On Iran:
The statement also stated that "the allies reiterate that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon and call on Iran to fully respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz." This comes at a time when Iran and the US have exchanged overnight attacks in the region. Trump threatened to make more attacks on Wednesday night (8).
Defense production capacity:
The document added that member countries announced "more than US$50 billion in new acquisitions and committed to expanding collective production capacity and working with industry to accelerate innovation."
