Mike Myers shocked the world by revealing that Austin Powers' iconic look was inspired by a 60s musician: Peter Asher! The hilarious character, with crooked teeth, thick glasses and long bangs, came directly from old photos of Asher. When Austin Powers returned to the spotlight with a fourth film, fans celebrated. Myers created a sleazy, charming and absurd hero, but the look came from Peter Asher (from the duo Peter & Gordon), who in the 60s wore a nerdy look with red hair, bad teeth and glasses. Asher confirmed: "there were some photos of me back in the day with the glasses and the bad teeth and the red hair... I had some influence pictorially on the look of Austin Powers".



Asher was inspired by Buddy Holly: "you could be a nerdy guy in glasses and still be a pop singer". Myers mixed this with a '60s swinger vibe, inspired by Dusty Springfield's song "The Look of Love." Other influences include Dean Martin (Matt Helm), Michael Caine (Harry Palmer) and parodied James Bond.

The character was born as a persona of the fictional band Ming Tea (with Susanna Hoffs). Myers' wife loved it and encouraged the development. The iconic teeth were made by Gary Archer. The result? A box office success that mixed satire, fashion and 60s music in a brilliant way.
