After hits like "Still Crazy After All These Years", Simon sought innovation with sophisticated rhythms and musicians. "Hearts and Bones" was a test for what would come in "Graceland", with experiments that didn't work out completely at the time. Simon said he started prioritizing rhythms out of frustration with this album.

Despite having great tracks like "The Late Great Johnny Ace", the album did not reach the desired standard. "Graceland" corrected the "errors" and became a landmark. This story reveals Simon's perfectionism and the constant evolution of his career.
