A building under construction in New York City mobilized authorities this Tuesday (7) after presenting a risk of structural collapse, leading to the isolation of the area and the temporary closure of neighboring buildings, including the Brazilian Consulate in the city.

According to the New York Fire Department, structural columns gave way on the 21st floor of the 33-story building, causing bricks to fall onto the street. Inspectors also identified cracks and sagging floors on the same floor.

At least nine buildings in the surrounding area were isolated as a precaution, while sections of 42nd and 43rd streets, between 1st and 3rd avenues, were closed to pedestrians and vehicles. There are no reports of injuries, and all construction workers have been located safely.

In a note published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the Consulate General of Brazil reported that the building "is temporarily closed due to the determination of the city authorities, due to the risk of collapse of a building on 42nd Street".

The Brazilian representation stated that it will release new information about the resumption of service as soon as possible.

A consulate employee, Helder Nozima, told CNN that he was working on the 32nd floor when he was told to leave the building.

"We heard a warning over the loudspeakers that the building was being blocked off. The New York police helped us get out," he said.

According to him, he expects to return to work this Wednesday (8).

A nearby school, which serves around 400 children, also had its activities interrupted as a safety measure, said New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

"The building remains unstable," said the mayor during a press conference.

"Since arriving on site, we have observed additional movement in one of the compromised columns," he added.

The head of the Fire Department, John Esposito, classified the incident as "very serious".

"The steel beams began to bow and give way due to the weight. We isolated the building and began evacuating people from neighboring buildings; the structure has continued to move since we arrived at the scene," he said.

According to Esposito, an isolation zone and a collapse risk area have been created while engineers and technicians from the Department of Buildings work to stabilize the structure.

Previous complaints
Records from the New York City Department of Buildings show that the construction site had been the subject of several complaints in recent months for alleged falling objects and unsafe conditions.

In a report made in April, a person stated that "debris is falling from a great height". In another, recorded in October, the report said that "a large object fell, crossed five floors and almost hit someone", in addition to mentioning problems with gas equipment.

According to the department, inspectors carried out inspections after the complaints, but found no irregularities that would justify fines. The building owner did not comment on the case.
