Brazilian agribusiness felt the effects of the downturn in trade between Brazil and the United States in the first half of 2026. Data from the Brazil-USA Trade Monitor, prepared by Amcham Brasil, show that the North American market's share of Brazilian exports fell to 9.4%, the lowest percentage recorded for a first half since the beginning of the historical series, in 1997.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$36.4 billion between January and June, a drop of 12.8% compared to the same period last year. Brazilian exports to the United States fell 13%, to US$17.4 billion, while imports decreased 12.5%, totaling US$19 billion.
In the first half of the year, Brazilian exports to the world grew 11.5%, driven mainly by the increase in sales to China, up 21.9%, and to the European Union, up 12.8%.
Within the agribusiness agenda, products relevant to the commercial relationship with the United States recorded a drop in sales. Unroasted coffee exports fell 34.8% year-on-year, while cellulose fell 9.4% in the period. The two products are among the main agricultural items shipped by Brazil to the North American market.
The reduction in sales occurs amid the increase in trade barriers imposed by the United States on some Brazilian products. According to Amcham, items subject to surcharges showed a more intense retraction, with a 16.6% drop in exports in the first half of the year, while products without additional tariffs fell 8.7%.
For the entity, maintaining or expanding these measures could put even more pressure on sectors that depend on the American market. Agribusiness is among the segments that are closely following the negotiations, as the United States is an important destination for higher value-added products and with a strong presence in the food industry.

"The first half of the year confirms that bilateral trade is going through a period of strong pressure and reinforces the need for an agreement that avoids the application of new tariffs within the scope of the Section 301 investigation. If implemented, the surcharges could further compromise trade between Brazil and the United States", stated the president of Amcham Brasil, Abrão Neto.
Among the products affected by the additional tariffs, the biggest declines were recorded in segments such as iron and steel semi-finished products, with a drop of 21.7%, trucks, with a drop of 46.7%, wood, with a drop of 40.5%, and copper, with a drop of 37.4%.
Despite the negative performance in the semester, June brought a sign of recovery for bilateral trade. Brazilian exports to the United States grew 3.7% compared to June 2025, interrupting a sequence of ten consecutive months of decline.
The advance, however, was mainly concentrated in products that are not subject to surcharges, which registered an increase of 35.8% in the month, driven by items such as aircraft and petroleum fuel oils. Products subject to additional tariffs continued to decline, with a drop of 17% in June.
