The fight for the top of the global box office for musical biopics has gained a new protagonist. Still in theaters, the film "Michael" totals US$ 898 million globally and is just a few steps away from overtaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" (US$ 911 million), which today leads the segment with the story of Freddie Mercury.
The extra breath to reach this mark must come from Japan, a strategic market where the production premieres on June 12th - a country that historically idolizes the artist, see the documentary "This Is It", which grossed US$57 million there in 2009.
New commercial phenomenon from Lionsgate
Even before setting this new record, the work directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson - the singer's nephew - had already made history at home.
The journey that retraces the artist's steps, from the days of the Jackson 5 to his consolidation as the King of Pop, officially became Lionsgate's biggest grossing film of all time. The film displaced studio box office phenomena such as "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" from the top of the rankings.
Foreign box office carries the revenue
The great engine behind the commercial success came from outside the United States. While North American cinemas accounted for US$354 million, international theaters secured the biggest slice of the pie, injecting more than US$543 million into revenue.
The international market was the major driver for the expressive production numbers, accounting for more than US$543 million of the total amount, while North America recorded around US$354 million.

In foreign cinemas, the United Kingdom and Ireland led the search for tickets, with a combined gross of more than US$68 million.
Soon afterwards, the main highlights on the European continent were France, which totaled US$54.5 million, and Germany, which also recorded a solid performance in the region. Another relevant result came from Russia, where the feature film earned almost US$10 million through local distributor Volga.
Latin America and Oceania also registered strong participation. Brazil played a prominent role on the global stage with revenues of US$32.2 million - a mark that became the highest grossing film for a film linked to the theme distributed by Universal Pictures in the country.
Australia contributed US$30.7 million, accompanied by consistent revenues in Mexico, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
