The fight for the top of the global box office for musical biopics has gained a new protagonist. Still in theaters, the film "Michael" totals US$ 898 million globally and is just a few steps away from overtaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" (US$ 911 million), which today leads the segment with the story of Freddie Mercury.

The extra breath to reach this mark must come from Japan, a strategic market where the production premieres on June 12th - a country that historically idolizes the artist, see the documentary "This Is It", which grossed US$57 million there in 2009.

New commercial phenomenon from Lionsgate
Even before setting this new record, the work directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson - the singer's nephew - had already made history at home.

Foreign box office carries the revenue
The great engine behind the commercial success came from outside the United States. While North American cinemas accounted for US$354 million, international theaters secured the biggest slice of the pie, injecting more than US$543 million into revenue.

The international market was the major driver for the expressive production numbers, accounting for more than US$543 million of the total amount, while North America recorded around US$354 million.
