The majority of Brazilians are against Neymar's call-up for the 2026 World Cup, but what draws attention is the generational difference in who supports or not the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Brazilian team.

This is what a national survey by AtlasIntel shows about the relationship between Brazilian fans and their country on the eve of the World Cup.

Among Generation Z respondents, 55.1% support the striker's call-up. Among baby boomers and members of the silent generation, rejection reaches 76.8%. Women also appear more opposed to the return of number 10: 59% said they were against the call-up, compared to 41.3% among men.

On CNN Esportes S/A this Sunday (24), Ygor Sampaio, head of intelligence, brands and consumer habits at AtlasIntel gave reasons for this generational disparity in support for Neymar.

We take the older generations who grew up with champion Brazil, they miss this moment of the Brazilian team, they are much more critical of the team's current moment, so the team's current idols do not represent this older generation. I think this is clear, for example, in the Neymar topic itself, when we look at the rejection of Neymar's call-up, it is a much stronger rejection in older generations and much smaller in younger generations.

But, what is Baby Boomer and Generation Z?
The Baby Boomer and Z Generations represent two extremes of a social and technological spectrum. Baby Boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964, valuing stability, work and building wealth. Generation Z encompasses those born between 1997 and 2012, characterized by its hyperconnectivity and digital fluidity.
