Chinese President Xi Jinping said he and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reached an "important consensus" and agreed to safeguard regional and global peace, in a message of thanks after his visit to Pyongyang, North Korean state news agency KCNA reported on Tuesday (9).

In the message released in full by KCNA, Xi stated that the two sides "exchanged in-depth views on issues of common interest and reached a series of important joint consensuses", reflecting their determination to further intensify ties.

Looking ahead, Xi said he is willing to work with Kim "based on fundamental and long-term interests" to "safeguard, consolidate and steadily develop" bilateral relations and contribute more to regional and global peace and development.

He also said that the visit was "successfully concluded" and that relations have entered "a new historic stage", while expressing hope of meeting Kim again.

Xi visited Pyongyang between Monday (8) and Tuesday in his first trip to North Korea in seven years. Xi said the visit established a deeper and more comprehensive understanding, opening a clearer path for the development of relations, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in the political, economic, commercial and cultural areas, at the same time that they committed to strengthening strategic communication between their governments, according to state media in both countries.

"Practical cooperation is an important driving force behind the development of relations between China and the DPRK," Xinhua said, also highlighting sectors such as agriculture, technology and construction.

The two countries are also expected to take advantage of the full reopening of border crossings and the resumption of civil aviation flights and international passenger trains, official Chinese media reported.

Other KCNA reports said the two leaders paid tribute at the Sino-Korean Friendship Tower in Pyongyang, which honors Chinese soldiers who died in the Korean War, and visited a political training school for party cadres.
