Wolverhampton Wanderers announced this Thursday (11) the dismissal of coach Rob Edwards following the team's relegation in the Premier League season.

The English club had hired the Welsh coach in November, on a three-and-a-half-year contract, taking him away from Middlesbrough, who were reluctant to release him.

Former Luton Town boss, Edwards was unable to reverse Wolves' poor form. The team finished bottom of the English Championship, with just 20 points, winning three in 38 matches and scoring just 27 goals.

"Following a comprehensive review at the end of the season, the club concluded that a change in leadership is necessary as Wolverhampton enters a new stage in its development," the club said in a statement.

Demotion to the Championship, the second division of English football, was confirmed in April, ending Wolves' eight consecutive seasons in the national elite.

"This was an extremely difficult decision. Following the conclusion of the season, we undertook a detailed review of all aspects of the football operation," said executive chairman Nathan Shi.

"Our positioning has nothing to do with character, professionalism or dedication. It's about defining what we believe offers Wolverhampton the best opportunity to move forward from a sporting point of view," he added.

Edwards played for Wolverhampton between 2004 and 2008 and began his career as a coach at the club. In 2016, he led the team on an interim basis for two matches and also worked with the under-23 team before moving on to roles in the England youth team.

Throughout his career, the coach took Luton Town to the Premier League and also spent time at Forest Green Rovers and Watford.

Wolverhampton reported that they are already working on hiring a new coach. According to the British press, the favorite to take on the role is César Peixoto, current coach of Gil Vicente, from Portugal.
