With Mbappé's goal and tribute to Carvajal, Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao
Real Madrid ended the season without titles, but celebrated to say goodbye to two idols this Saturday (23) in the 38th and final round of LaLiga. The Spanish runners-up beat Athletic 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu, in the last match of full-back Carvajal and defender Alaba with the team's shirt.
In his 451st match for Real, Carvajal was responsible for assisting Gonçalo Garcia's goal, 12 minutes into the first half, which opened the scoring. The first half ended with a 2-1 lead for the home team, goals from Bellingham and Guruzeta (Athletic).
In the second half, Mbappé scored Real Madrid's third and secured the top spot in LaLiga's top scorer for the second consecutive season, finishing with 25 goals, 2 more than Mallorca's Muriqi. Brahim Diaz scored the Merengues' fourth, and Izeta scored in stoppage time.
Alaba was substituted in the 25th minute of the second half, and Carvajal in the 34th. On both occasions the match was stopped so that the honorees could leave the field. Both were celebrated by the fans and welcomed by family members on the sidelines of the field.
At Mestalla, Barcelona took the lead in the 16th minute of the second half with Lewandowski, in his last match for the Catalan club. Afterwards, however, Hansi Flick's team saw their rival turn around with Guerra, Rioja and Rodriguez.
With the title already defined in advance, the last round was very competitive at the bottom of the table. The three relegated to the second division were Mallorca (42 points), Girona (41) and Oviedo (29). Levante and Osasuna also finished with 42 points, but were saved by the tiebreaker criteria.
