With a league, football revenues could reach R$25 billion, says expert
The Brazilian Championship appears to be on track to be organized by a club league in 2027. Liga Forte União (LFU) and Liga do Futebol Brasileiro (Libra), two blocks of clubs that sold television rights, drafted a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the parties establishing two pillars of a probable unification.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is not opposed to the movement. The current president, Samir Xaud, has already publicly supported the creation of a league to organize Series A and B of the Brasileirão.
The new round of negotiations for broadcasting rights will be in 2030. On average, LFU clubs will receive R$1.7 billion per season until 2029. Libra clubs closed an agreement worth around R$1.117 billion. The clubs understood that revenue will be even greater with block negotiations.
On the CNN Esportes S/A program this Sunday (31), César Grafietti, an economist specializing in sports finance, used the success of the Premier League and LaLiga to support the creation of an implementation in Brazilian football.
When we talk about the Premier League, we first talk about the Premier League, then we talk about Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, when we talk about Spain, we talk about LaLiga, then we talk about the clubs. So, in Brazil we talk about the clubs first and then the championship, right? Because there is still a lot of individualism. When we talk about a league, we talk about creating a product, where when you watch a game on television, you know that it is the Brazilian Championship, because there is a standardization of cameras, there is an aesthetic standardization, there is a pitch that you know is a pitch that is very similar everywhere and this means that the Brazilian football product can be valued.
When asked how much this could yield financially for Brazilian football, César put R$25 billion. The expert explained that due to the product's appreciation, imagining this value is viable.
With time we could achieve this. Because you can add value to the product, bring in more sponsors, bring in more audiences which will increase box office revenue and fan membership, bring in more money from broadcasting and try to access other markets from a broadcasting point of view.
