South Africa's debut against Mexico took on even more dramatic tones in the final minutes of the match. At 36 minutes into the second half, when they were already 2-0 down and had one player less, the VAR called Wilton Pereira Sampaio to review a possible aggression.

Shirt number 11 Zwane was punished by expulsion after hitting Alvarado in the face outside the ball dispute.

The midfielder had already been expelled
The midfielder Sithole was the first to be expelled from the World Cup in 2026. The number 13 received a red card after fouling Brian Gutiérrez, from Mexico.

Four minutes into the second half, the Mexican midfielder was released and carried the ball to the edge of the area. Sithole was the last man standing, and ended up tangling with his opponent.
