Who is Senator Jaques Wagner, target of operation in the Master case

Senator Jaques Wagner (PT), leader of the Government in the Federal Senate, was the target of the 9th phase of Operation Compliance Zero. The agents carry out a search and seizure warrant against the parliamentarian, who is being investigated for his relationship with Augusto Lima, a former partner at Banco Master.

The senator was born in 1951 in Rio de Janeiro, where he began his political career in the student movement. Jaques was studying Civil Engineering at PUC-Rio, but abandoned the course - and his hometown - in 1974 due to repression by the military dictatorship.

It was during this period that the parliamentarian moved to Bahia, his electoral home to this day. In the state, he began working in the petrochemical industry and became director and president of the Petrochemical Industry Workers Union.

Due to his union activities, he became close to current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and was one of the founders of the Workers' Party in 1980. Jaques Wagner was the party's first president in Bahia.

He was elected for the first time in the 1990 elections when he ran for a seat in the National Congress. He was re-elected in the following two legislatures, but in 2002 he chose to run for Government of Bahia, ending up defeated.

During the first Lula government he was in charge of two ministries, Labor and Employment and Institutional Relations. At the end of his term, in 2006, he ran again for the government of Bahia. This time he won and was re-elected four years later.

During the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT), he led two other ministries, Defense and the Civil House. He remained in government until the former president's departure in 2016.

Jacques Wagner was elected senator in the 2018 election and, since 2023, has been the leader of the government in the Upper House.

The senator became the focus of investigations into the Master case due to the Bahian government's relationship with Augusto Lima. Daniel Vorcaro's former partner would have been responsible for a credit program granted in the state, CredCesta, aimed at state employees, and would have maintained dialogue with the then governor of Bahia and former minister of the Civil House Rui Costa and with Jacques Wagner during the period in which he was secretary of the Bahian government.

In March this year, it was revealed that a company owned by the Bahian politician's daughter-in-law maintained a contract with Banco Master for three years.

Jaques Wagner is a pre-candidate for re-election to the Federal Senate this year.
