WhatsApp gains usernames and will need a number to start a conversation; see how to create yours

WhatsApp released this Monday (29) the reservation of usernames. The new feature is the first step towards, in the future, the application allowing you to add contacts without providing your cell phone number.
To reserve your username, open the "Settings" section, click on "Account" and select the "Username" option. Enter the desired nickname and click "Save".
According to WhatsApp, the feature was created to increase users' privacy. When it is released, people and companies will not see your number when they receive messages for the first time.
The option to add contacts by username should be released later this year. The app will send a notification when the feature is available.

The change means that phone numbers will no longer be shared automatically when adding someone to group conversations or when sending a first message to a person or company, WhatsApp said in a statement.
According to the app, this is a "privacy feature". To contact someone, you will only need to know their username, the company explained.
Due to the large number of users - more than 3 billion, according to WhatsApp -, it is likely that many will not be able to obtain their first pseudonym option.
The company said it will begin implementing the measure gradually from this Monday, without detailing the schedule.
In addition, "creators, small businesses and organizations" will be able to ask WhatsApp to use the same username they already use on other platforms of the group, such as Facebook and Instagram.
