Argentina continues this Tuesday (7) its journey into the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup. Current champions of the tournament, Lionel Messi's team faces Egypt in the round of 16, at 1pm (Brasília time), at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta, in a duel that brings together two of the biggest names in world football: Messi and Mohamed Salah.

In addition to defining one of those classified in the quarter-finals, the clash marks the farewell to the 1pm time slot (Brasília time) in this World Cup. From the quarter-finals onwards, all tournament games will be played between 4pm and 10pm, with the decision scheduled for 4pm on July 19th.

For the first time qualified for the knockout stage of the competition, the African team eliminated Australia on penalties and is now trying to overthrow one of the favorites for the title to reach an unprecedented place in the quarter-finals.

In addition to the classification, the match could yield another special chapter in Messi's career. Top scorer in the World Cup alongside Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, with seven goals, the number 10 could become the first in his career to score in five consecutive games in the same edition of the World Cup.

Hindsight favors the South Americans. Argentina and Egypt have faced each other twice in history, with two victories for Albiceleste: 6-0 in the semi-final of the 1928 Olympic Games and 2-0 in a friendly played in 2008, in Cairo.

Whoever wins faces the quarter-finals against the qualifier between Colombia and Switzerland.
