WCF: Mining experiences a window of opportunity in the global sustainable agenda

Flora Bitancourt, CIO of the World Climate Foundation, sees an unprecedented window of opportunity for mining in the global energy transition agenda.

The assessment was made during CNN Talks: Nova Era da Mineração, held this Tuesday (30), in São Paulo. The event brings together authorities, experts and industry leaders.

For Bitancourt, "the global agenda is calling on the mining sector to act and be part of the green transition". This invitation, however, has prerequisites for it to come to blows.

The executive exemplifies: "The expansion of investment and capital flow comes with the construction of a healthy regulatory environment. Investors need to understand how the sector is taking responsibility and bringing clear ESG processes and metrics. In addition to a view of commitment, responsibility, and opportunity for forest restoration and preservation around operations."

"The real number of preserved areas is already a greater number than any other industry and these numbers, for those who have technical discussions, are already very clear." But, in Bitancourt's view, the leap to the mainstream is missing.

Future of Mining Coalition
It is in an attempt to build this bridge that the World Climate Foundation launched the Future of Mining Coalition.

During the panel, the executive explained that this project seeks to dialogue in an intersectoral way - not only to position mining as an essential sector for the transition but to gather the gaps and difficulties in investments flowing towards this agenda.

"COP30 talked about an implementation agenda. And who implements it? The private sector. We need to bring these actors to the table", he concludes.

CNN Talks: New Era of Mining brings together authorities, businesspeople, experts and representatives of the mineral sector to discuss the paths of Brazilian mining in a new phase of global competition for critical minerals, energy transition and supply chain security.

The meeting takes place at a time when Brazil is trying to transform its geological advantage into economic, industrial and diplomatic protagonism, with debates on financing, environmental licensing, innovation, sustainability, traceability, added value and greater participation of the country in the most noble stages of the mineral chain.
