Walmart and Sam's Club reduce prices and Trump tries to take credit
US President Donald Trump is taking credit for Walmart's summer promotion, claiming that a request from his administration resulted in discounts on thousands of items for road trips and pool parties.
The largest supermarket chain in the USA highlighted on Monday (6) some of its seasonal promotions, common during the summer. This included price reductions on ground beef, ribs, soda and other products at Walmart and Sam's Club stores, according to a press release.
On Monday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Walmart reduced prices "at the request of my Administration to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great country." He highlighted a supposed 15% discount on beef.
"This is so important to the millions of Americans who smartly shop at Walmart, a truly patriotic company that loves America," he continued.
Trump tied this regular seasonal promotion to his claims that his administration has reduced costs for consumers, from the price of gasoline to eggs.
The comments echoed Trump's false claims that Walmart's cheaper Thanksgiving basket last year was due to sharply falling food prices during his presidency.
Summer sales are typical of chains like Walmart, and these discounts were already in effect a week before Trump's Truth Social post.
For example, cases of soda on sale were also discounted last summer, according to the Facebook page of a Walmart store in Texas.
This isn't the first time Trump has linked Walmart's discounts to his administration.
He promoted a similar narrative in 2025 when he claimed that Walmart's annual Thanksgiving basket was cheaper than the previous year's.
But the statement omitted important context, such as the fact that the 2025 basket has fewer items and contains more products from Walmart's own brand, "Great Value."
According to Walmart's press release, the 73% beef ground beef roll is discounted by almost 12%, going for $5.94 per pound.
Green corn and cherries, both in season, have discounts of approximately 50%. 24-packs of Pepsi and Coca-Cola soft drinks are on sale for $9.97, and a pack of 200 disposable paper plates is also $1 off.
Sam's Club is also offering discounts on 250 items, including different types of meat such as chicken wings, beef sausages and ribs.
Walmart has not commented on Trump's allegations. CNN Internacional contacted the White House to obtain a position.

What's happening with supermarket prices?
Walmart's summer sales are not uncommon. Supermarkets often reduce prices on seasonal produce - exactly the ones customers want for a backyard barbecue.
The discounts come at a time when many Americans say they are dissatisfied with Trump's economy. A CNN International poll conducted by SSRS found that 77% of respondents said his policies had increased the cost of living in their communities, including a majority of Republicans.
Food prices have risen 2.7% in the last year, which is less than general inflation of 4.2%. But food price inflation is still more than double compared to two years ago.
The reason food prices seem so variable is that every food product and every industry is different. Take beef, for example, which hit a record $9.64 per pound in April, a 13% increase from the previous year, according to USDA data.
The beef industry has been facing the smallest cattle herd in 75 years due to prolonged droughts.
Other products, such as tomatoes, have also seen significant price increases due to a harsh winter, combined with customs duties and diesel costs.
According to a USDA report based on supermarket advertised prices, cherry prices on the Fourth of July were similar to last year.
