Waack: Trump is losing control of the war to Iran

The ceasefire with Iran is turning out to be a dangerous fantasy of American President Donald Trump, who chose to start this war without a plan.

He despised the professional staff of the military and secret services and trusted, above all, his own instinct. In short, the opposite of what any serious strategist would do. It is no surprise that Iran, not the United States, is now controlling this war.

Yes, a country with a repulsive regime, militarily crushed by tens of thousands of attacks carried out by the greatest military power on the planet. It is this actor who controls what happens.

Given this fact, Trump is showing alarming signs of inconsistency. In addition to his typical inconsistency. In the last few hours he confused Japan with Iran, he confused President Volodymyr Zelensky, of Ukraine, with Vladimir Putin, of Russia.

He called the heads of Iran's repulsive regime "trash" and "crazy people", with whom it was not even worth negotiating, after having said that he was dealing with good and rational people, with whom it was pleasant to negotiate.

He has now returned to talking about invading Iran, or destroying the country's civil infrastructure, which would be a war crime. But hours later he expressed doubts about what he himself said he could do in military terms.

In other words, it doesn't look like a president leading a war. But rather, a disoriented man reacting to events rather than directing them. Really strong leaders often let their actions speak for them. Weak leaders make threats and then reveal how unwilling they are to carry them out.
