According to a Secret Service statement published on social media, a person approached the checkpoint near the White House, took out a gun from his backpack and began shooting at the police officers. The agents returned fire and shot the suspect, the agency reported.
A pedestrian was also struck by gunfire, but it was unclear how serious the injuries were, according to a separate Secret Service statement cited by several news outlets. The statement said it was unclear who fired the shot that struck the pedestrian.
The suspect in shooting at the agents was identified as a person with mental disorders, a law enforcement official told Reuters, adding that a "restraint order" had previously been issued against him.
