Venezuela: the earthquake and the generalized crisis - The Issue #1751

One week after the earthquakes that devastated the northern region of Venezuela, what remains is a humanitarian tragedy of major proportions: the official count has around 2,000 deaths and 10,000 injured, and the UN estimates approximately 50,000 people missing. There were two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale that, within 39 seconds, brought tens of thousands of buildings to the ground. The real scale of the disaster is still far from being known: the UN estimates that more than 6 million people may have been affected and has already announced the sending of 10,000 body bags to accommodate the bodies. Search teams do everything they can to try to rescue the victims while they are still alive, a job that counts on international help from several countries - including Brazil.
In this episode, Natuza Nery talks to two interviewees. First, she speaks to journalist Pedro Pannunzio, who lives in Caracas and is covering the tragedy. Pedro tells what he has seen on the streets, reports on the search and rescue work and is moved by the stories he heard. Natuza also interviews analyst Paulo Velasco about Venezuela's institutional crises in politics and the economy.
