Venezuela releases part of X, but access to information remains limited
The blockade of the social network
Although the main internet operators have reestablished access to the platform, some users are still unable to upload images or videos, as not all domains used by X have been unblocked, the organization reported.
Venezuela has one of the most restrictive media environments in the world, which makes it difficult for residents and family members abroad to obtain information about the damage and number of victims of the earthquakes. More than 200 websites are blocked in the country, including national and international press outlets, social networks and tools to circumvent censorship, such as VPNs, according to an update released by VE sin Filtro on Thursday (25).
The partial lifting of the blockade on
"In the coming hours and days, timely access to reliable information and communication channels will be vital to protecting the lives, safety and well-being of the population," the UN said in a statement.
Access to X has been suspended in Venezuela since 2024, blocked by former president Nicolás Maduro. On the occasion, Maduro criticized billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of the social network, saying that he violated the rules of his own platform, "inciting hatred, fascism, civil war, death, and the confrontation of Venezuelans."
Starlink, the global satellite internet network run by SpaceX, which is also Musk's company, announced on Thursday night that it is providing free service until July 25 to new and existing customers. "We are also working to quickly deploy Starlink terminals and restore connectivity in the most affected areas," the company said.
After Starlink's announcement, Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, thanked Musk and the company.
Thank you, @elonmusk and the @Starlink team, for supporting those affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela with free connectivity. Every connection counts during times like these. https://t.co/tZHmkwk91K

"Every connection makes a difference in times like these", said Rodríguez in the early hours of this Friday (26).
