USA x PCC and CV: opposition congratulates Flávio; base defends national sovereignty

After the United States classified the Red Command and the PCC (First Command of the Capital) as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists" late this Thursday afternoon (28), government and opposition parliamentarians shared the decision on social media.

Those who support President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) vehemently criticized the measure, classifying it as "direct intervention in national sovereignty", while members of the opposition congratulated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), attributing the American government's decision to the senator's meeting with Donald Trump this week.

Until the publication of this report, the Brazilian government had not commented on the US announcement.

What the base says
Federal deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP) used his social networks to criticize the decision which, according to him, goes against the "most basic assumptions of the Law" and said that Flávio and Eduardo Bolsonaro should be held responsible for a possible "act of war by the USA against Brazil".

"What does this mean? A very serious threat to national sovereignty! US law authorizes physical attacks, therefore acts of war, against the territory of countries in which such organizations operate, in accordance with US dictates", he wrote.

Another parliamentarian, federal deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), also published criticism of the announcement published by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to him, the new classification will bring negative consequences for Brazil, making the country vulnerable to "open space for US military intervention" in Brazilian territory.

"This classification of the CV and PCC as terrorist organizations by the USA will have negative consequences for Brazil, our economy, foreign investments and is a brutal attack on our sovereignty. Eduardo and Flávio are irresponsible and do not want to combat organized crime. They want to make us vulnerable and open space for US military intervention in Brazil, they want to make Brazil a colony. They are traitors to the Fatherland! That is what is at stake!", he posted on his social networks.

Former federal deputy Ivan Valente (Psol) also criticized the decision, which, for him, is classified as "direct intervention in national sovereignty".

"The US decision to classify PCC and CV as terrorist organizations is a direct intervention in national sovereignty. Brazil will not tolerate interference in its decisions in its legislation and interference in powers. Justice must intervene to judge and arrest traitors to the country. The role of the Bolsonaro family is shameful", he stated.

What the opposition says
The senator and pre-candidate for President of the PL, Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), was one of the first to speak out about the United States' decision. Reposting Marco Rubio's announcement about the rankings on social media, he commented "Great day."

The senator also shared a video declaring that he did more for Brazil than the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

"On a trip as a pre-candidate, I did more for Brazil and for the safety of Brazilians than the PT and Lula did in their seventeen years in office", said the senator, who stated that he went to the United States "to work". He thanked President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Jair Bolsonaro's eldest son also accused the current government of colluding with organized crime. "A government that does not have control over its own territory, that does not even control the seats, is because it colludes with organized crime," he said.

The PL leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), said that this Thursday represents a great day for "those who believe in law, order and justice".

"Lula spent weeks trying to convince the United States that the PCC and Red Command should not be treated as terrorist organizations. He failed. Trump ignored the Brazilian government's appeals [...]. Today was a bad day for those who relativize crime. And a great day for those who believe in law, order and justice," he wrote.

Senator from Paraná, Sérgio Moro (PL) also congratulated the "diplomacy" of his colleague Flávio Bolsonaro. "Flavio Bolsonaro's diplomacy yielded more than Lula's pro-crime lobby", he published.

Classification of factions as terrorists
The United States Department of State announced on Thursday that it has classified the CCP and the PV as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists."

The statement, signed by Secretary Marco Rubio, also states that the US intends to designate the two criminal groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations as of June 5.

"The CV and the PCC are two of the most violent criminal organizations in Brazil. Together, they command thousands of members and orchestrated brutal attacks against police officers, public authorities and Brazilian civilians", highlights the text.

Also according to the statement, the Trump administration will use all available tools to keep illicit drugs out of North American territory and stop the flow of resources that finance "violent narco-terrorists."

"The action taken today by the Department of State further demonstrates the Trump administration's unwavering commitment to dismantling cartels and criminal organizations in our region and ensuring the safety of the American people," the announcement concluded.
