US tariffs would affect 21% of what Brazil sells, says government

The minister of Mdic (Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services), Márcio Elias Rosa, stated this Tuesday (2) that the most recent proposed tariffs from the United States on Brazilian exports would affect around 21% of what Brazil sells.

The USTR (United States Office of Commerce) proposed a new punitive tariff of 25% on several products from Brazil for alleged unfair practices, citing digital commerce and illegal deforestation.

According to Rosa, the sectors of machinery and equipment, plastics, wood, paperboard, footwear, cast iron, fish and crustaceans would be most affected if tariffs are put into practice. The US has until July 15 to take "response measures" as part of the investigation into Brazil.

During a speech to journalists in Brasília, Rosa also stated that Pix is not at the negotiating table with the USA.

"There's no chance of that," he said.

One of the points questioned by the USA is precisely the use of Pix in Brazil, which would be generating unfair competition against North American credit card companies.

In the same press conference, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin described the USTR's recommendation for the adoption of tariffs against Brazil as "totally unreasonable".

"Brazil will work to ensure that tariffs do not occur. The path is through dialogue, which was already occurring", he stated, adding that "false saboteur patriots" are putting electoral interests above the country.

Earlier, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and pre-candidate for President, of being a traitor and a sellout of the country. He linked Flávio and his brother, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, to recent US decisions against Brazil.
