Washington is "rapidly mobilizing critical resources to support earthquake relief operations and help save lives" at Venezuela's request, he added.

A statement from the Venezuelan presidency said the purpose of the meeting was to discuss rescue operations for survivors and the sending of humanitarian aid.

Central Command had previously stated that it was "mobilizing" forces to the region at the request of the interim government.
