US House approves bill to protect children on social media

The United States House of Representatives approved this Monday (29) a bill that requires online platforms to adopt protective measures for children and adolescents.
The proposal could open the way to an impasse with the Senate, where parliamentarians defend stricter rules.

The American Congress has shown growing interest in preventing harm to young people in the environment digital, amid the negative reaction faced by social media companies.
The Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act received 267 votes in favor and 117 against, with support from Democrats and Republicans.

The text requires companies to offer tools for children and adolescents to limit resources considered addictive and adopt policies to protect them from some types of harm, including exploitation sexual.
The proposal is the first initiative by the Chamber to regulate child safety on the internet since the Senate approved the Kids Online Safety Act (a bill on online safety for children), by 91 votes to 3, in 2024.
The bill approved by the Senate imposes on social media companies a "duty of care" in relation to younger users. Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has been negotiating with the White House to gain support for a legislative package that would include this proposal.
