US asks Lula government for approval to appoint Daniel Perez as ambassador to Brazil

The United States government sent to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, last week, the request for an agreement for the appointment of Daniel Perez to the position of US ambassador in Brazil.
The information was confirmed to the blog by sources from the North American government.
"Agrément" is a query made to the country where the ambassador will be appointed. In diplomatic formality, governments usually make a formal and confidential consultation about the name they wish to nominate to command the embassy - the so-called "agrément" - and only then announce the person chosen to occupy the position of ambassador.

Pérez was nominated by the Donald Trump government for the post of ambassador to Brazil on June 1st. The appointment caused discomfort with the Brazilian government because the official announcement of an ambassador generally occurs after consultation with the country that will receive the diplomat, which did not occur in the case of Perez.
Perez's name still needs to be considered by the US Senate. The expectation is that before the end of the year the new ambassador will be ready to work in Brazil, including with the approval of the Brazilian government.
If approved, he will be the first US ambassador to Brazil since the departure of Elizabeth Bagley, appointed by Joe Biden. The post has been vacant since January 2025, when Trump returned to the White House.
Currently, the American diplomatic mission in Brasília is commanded by chargé d'affaires, Gabriel Escobar. As of July, he will be replaced by Natasha Franceschi.

Son of Cuban immigrants, Perez was born in New York and moved with his family to Florida as a child, in 1993. He is currently part of the Republican Party, the same as Trump, and shows support for the president's policies.
The nominee for the US Embassy in Brazil is in charge of the Chamber of Florida since 2024. Last year, he was named as a possible candidate for the position of state attorney general, but decided to remain president of the House.
