US announces fund to combat terrorism in Latin America and the Caribbean

The US State Department this month launched a funding initiative to create a counterterrorism program in the Western Hemisphere. According to the document, the total amount available for financing is up to US$8.8 million (the equivalent of R$44.6 million).
The measure comes at a time when the US announced the classification of the Brazilian factions Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) as "specially designated global terrorists" and as "foreign terrorist organizations".
The project aims to train judges, prosecutors and investigators in Latin America and the Caribbean to suffocate the financial networks of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and combat the influence of groups supported by Iran.
