US and Iran hold indirect talks in Qatar, says source

Indirect technical talks between the United States and Iran are underway in Doha, with Qatar and Pakistan acting as mediators, a source with direct knowledge of the discussions told Reuters news agency on Wednesday (1st).

American envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Qatar's prime minister on Tuesday (30) to prepare the ground for Wednesday's technical sessions, but are not participating in the talks themselves, the source said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said talks between Iran and Qatar this Wednesday will address the implementation of Tehran's agreement with the United States, as well as frozen Iranian assets.

Baghaei said on Tuesday (30) that what "will likely occur in Doha" today will be a "discussion with the Qatari side on the implementation of some provisions of the memorandum of understanding, including the clause regarding the release of Iran's restricted assets."

He also stated that the Iranian negotiating team has no plans to meet with the American delegation in the coming days.

Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari also said on Tuesday that US envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner had arrived in Doha to meet with Qatari mediators, but stressed that there would be no meeting with Iranian officials.

He added that the $6 billion in frozen Iranian resources had not yet been transferred to Tehran, but said this would happen "as negotiations progress."

As CNN showed, according to the Qatari Foreign Ministry, the meeting reviewed the latest developments in negotiations between the United States and Iran under the memorandum of understanding between the two parties, as well as efforts to strengthen security and stability in the region through dialogue and diplomacy.

Tuesday's meeting also addressed the ceasefire in Lebanon "and emphasized the importance of stabilizing it and moving forward from it to preserve the unity, sovereignty and stability of Lebanon," the ministry said.

Qatar also reported that technical negotiations between Iran and the United States continue, but that, at the moment, there are no high-level meetings between the two sides.

Lebanon

Despite a US-brokered agreement signed on Friday (26) between Israel and Lebanon, Israeli armed forces reported having struck a member of Hezbollah in the Manzala area of southern Lebanon, close to the "security zone" where Israeli troops operated.

The military stated that the individual posed a threat to their soldiers.

Strait of Hormuz

At least 32 vessels transited the strategic waterway in the last 24 hours, according to data from MarineTraffic. Seventeen ships entered the Persian Gulf - including seven oil tankers and 10 cargo ships - and another 15 left the gulf.

Oman recently presented a proposal to the US and other allies on the future of the strait, according to a regional diplomat and a US source familiar with the matter.
