US$150 million blockbuster financed by Saudi Arabia fails at the global box office
Produced to become a landmark in the Saudi film industry, **"Desert Warrior"** ended up becoming one of the biggest commercial failures of the year. The historical epic, financed with an estimated budget of **US$150 million**, had a debut far below expectations and failed to attract audiences to theaters.
The film was conceived as an international super production, bringing together a star cast led by **Anthony Mackie**, **Aiysha Hart**, **Ben Kingsley** and **Sharlto Copley**. The story follows conflicts in the Arabian Peninsula during the 7th century and mixes battles, politics and disputes for power into an epic narrative.
Even with grandiose sets, top-notch visual effects and an international advertising campaign, "Desert Warrior" recorded much lower revenue than expected in its first days of exhibition.
Experts point out that several factors contributed to the disappointing result. Competition with major Hollywood franchises, low brand recognition among the public and the difficulty of selling a historical epic to international audiences limited viewers' interest.
The failure represents a severe blow to Saudi Arabia's strategy of expanding its presence in the global entertainment industry. In recent years, the country has invested billions of dollars in cinema, sports and cultural events as part of the economic diversification plan known as Vision 2030.
Despite the negative commercial performance, some critics praised the technical quality of the production, especially the photography, the action sequences and the historical reconstruction of the sets.
Analysts believe that "Desert Warrior" will be able to recoup part of its investment through the sale of rights to streaming platforms and international markets, although it is unlikely to be able to offset the huge budget with theatrical revenue alone.
