Unprecedented surgery with a Chinese robot that could change treatment in the SUS; look

Brazil performed the first robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery using technology developed in China and adapted to the national market. The procedure, knee surgery, was performed with a robot brought to the country by the Brazilian company Biomecanica, specialized in orthopedic implants.

According to the company, the equipment has already been used in more than 2,000 surgeries in China before arriving in Brazil. The implementation of the technology involved international transfer of knowledge, training of Brazilian doctors, adaptation to national implants and obtaining registration with the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).

Although the first operation was performed on the knee, the platform can also be used in hip and spine surgeries. The system assists the surgeon in pre-operative planning and provides real-time information during the procedure, allowing greater precision in implant positioning.

Biomecanica states that technology can help standardize procedures, reduce technical variations and improve clinical results. As the surgery was performed in a public hospital, the expectation is that the initiative will also represent a step forward in expanding access to robotic surgery in the Unified Health System (SUS).

"The technology works as a support tool for the surgeon, who maintains total control over the procedure. The system assists in pre-operative planning and provides real-time information during surgery, contributing to greater precision in the positioning of implants and more predictability of results", explains Ana Carolina Pengo, CVO of Biomecanica.

After the pioneering procedure, the company intends to expand professional training programs and gradually expand the use of the platform in Brazilian hospitals.
