Under-20 Brasileirão: starting defender should miss Corinthians in the first leg derby of the quarter-finals

Qualified for the under-20 Brasileirão knockout stage for the first time since 2023, Corinthians will most likely not be able to count on defender Iago Machado in the first game of the tournament's quarter-finals, against Palmeiras.

Called up for a period of training with the Brazilian under-17 team, which takes place between the 5th and 12th of July, at Granja Comary, which aims to prepare for the category's World Cup, the player must miss the first leg Derby, after all, the match will take place on the 8th or 9th of July.

For this match, coach William Batista must promote Lorenzo's entry into the starting lineup. The player even started the season as a starter alongside Iago, but ended up losing space due to Yago Melo's good form.

With an eye on the second leg, which takes place a week later, Iago Machado will once again be available to Timão for the decisive duel against their rival.

Considered one of the great promises of Corinthians' youth categories, Iago Machado has been carrying out activities with Timão's professionals since January, and has already been involved in games. Under a contract valid until April 16, 2028, the player has a termination fine set at R$66 million for Brazil and R$100 million outside the country.

Corinthians advances in the under-20 Brasileirão

Corinthians entered the field this Wednesday afternoon (1st) to face Juventude, away from home, and ended up defeated 1-0. The match was valid for the last round of the first phase of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship, and despite the setback, Filhos do Terrão advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament.

With the result, Timãozinho remained in eighth place with 29 points - eight wins, five draws and five defeats - 31 goals scored and 25 conceded. The defeat put an end to Filhos do Terrão's undefeated streak playing away from home in the current season. Even so, Filhos do Terrão advanced and will face rival Palmeiras in the next phase.

To advance to the quarterfinals of the Brasileirão U20, something that hasn't happened since 2023, Alvinegro needed to win by any score so as not to depend on other results. But as they were defeated, Flamengo stumbled, drawing with Avaí, and thus guaranteed a place in the knockout stages.
