Ukraine failed to intercept any of the 23 ballistic missiles launched by Russia

Ukraine's anti-missile system failed in the early hours of Monday (6) and left the country's capital, Kiev, unprotected. Russia bombarded the city with missiles and drones, killing at least 12 people, officials said.
Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of US interceptors just days after this year's deadliest attack. The country's defense system, the Patriot, was sent by the USA in 2025, and is one of the most advanced anti-missile systems in the world. The Patriot (which comes from the English acronym "Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target" - "Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target" in Portuguese) is a mobile surface-to-air missile system developed and manufactured by the American equipment giant weapons Raytheon Technologies. It is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the US arsenal and has been in operation since the 1980s, with numerous upgrades over the years.
The intense overnight bombing occurred ahead of this week's NATO summit in Turkey, where US President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to give new impetus to the attempt to end the war, which is now in its fifth year.
Ukrainian Air Force Data showed that it failed to shoot down any of the 23 ballistic missiles fired by Russia, highlighting the serious shortage of American interceptors. Moscow has intensified its air war this year as its advance on the battlefield has slowed.
Ukraine intercepted another 37 missiles and more than 90% of the 351 drones used during the attack, the Air Force said.

Zelenskiy has repeatedly said that Ukraine needs more interceptors for its American-made Patriot missile defense system - the only weapon in its arsenal capable of effectively shooting down ballistic projectiles, whose high speed and steep flight path make them difficult to intercept.
The Ukrainian leader called for "firm decisions" at the NATO summit, which begins this Tuesday in Ankara, to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself.
"As long as Patriot missiles remain in the stocks of our allies, Russia will only feel emboldened to continue destroying residential buildings," Zelenskiy said on 12 and that more than 50 people were injured across the city. In one of the neighborhoods, the bodies of an entire family - the parents and son - were pulled from the rubble, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.
The attack came days after 31 people were killed in a Russian attack on Kiev on Thursday - the deadliest attack on the city this year.
