Turkish President Recep Erdogan presented leaders attending the NATO summit with a pistol and ammunition, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed on Wednesday (8).
While flying home from Ankara, Starmer told British journalists that the Turkish president gave each leader a pistol with his name engraved on it, along with a box of ammunition. It also included a note, to exempt weapons from export controls. Starmer stressed that he left the weapon in Turkey, as taking it to the United Kingdom would be illegal.
The summit in Ankara was the last major international event for the prime minister, who announced his resignation last month. He will remain in the role until the Labor Party chooses his successor, most likely former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.
The meeting came at a tense time for the 77-year-old transatlantic alliance, with the United States demanding members fulfill their pledge to increase their defense spending. However, NATO chief Mark Rutte insisted that the alliance emerged stronger from the meeting, despite the differences.
